Canadian Cancer Society Daily Lottery Fundraising Campaign

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national charity that funds research, advocates prevention and supports those already living with cancer. Their lottery fundraising campaigns have helped raise valuable funding in addition to their other fund development programs in their on-going mission to help eradicate cancer amongst Canadians.  We have come a long way over the past 60 years ago when the cancer survival rate was 1 in 4, compared to today where 62% of cancer patients survive and it’s the support of Canadians that has made this progress possible.  Recently in June 2011, researchers conducting a landmark clinical trial discovered a drug that will significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer in post-menopausal women that undoubtedly will save many lives.

Since 2001, they have been able to increase their fundraising dollars by 55% which is a remarkable achievement and a great testament to the millions of Canadians that support such a worthy cause.  Supporters have many choices on how to help the society through their many fundraising programs but their lottery fundraising campaigns have been an extraordinary funding vehicle.  In the past 12 years that the Canadian Cancer Society has run lottery fundraising campaigns they have raised over $36 million dollars and 100% of net proceeds goes to directly funding cancer research. Every lottery campaign is self-funded meaning all prize and administrative costs come directly from the revenue generated from each ticket sale. Even though there are thousands of winners from every lottery fundraising campaign that the Canadian Cancer Society runs, the biggest winners are those who will benefit from the research and support the society funds.

A notable success story is the experience of Cathy Miceli, who at 24 and the mother of two young children was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer that is rare in young adults.  After radiation treatments and a bone marrow transplant Miceli was on the road back to health.  Over two decades later, Miceli celebrated her 30th wedding anniversary, has seen her kids graduate from post secondary school and just this past spring won the grand prize of $1.5 million in the Daffodil Daily Lottery! An amazingly heartwarming story.
