Support #SpiritDay and Incorporate Taking a Stand into your CSR Business Values

In the delivery of our fundraising services, Miratel represents some of Canada’s largest and most reputable charitable organizations. At the heart of those business partnerships is a shared commitment to ethics and integrity and that commitment extends beyond our services and is also reflected in our CSR business socio-environmental policies. Being located in one of the most diverse cities in the world, inclusion is at the heart of our social justice mandates. These range from AODA certification, equal opportunity employment initiatives to providing a workplace that promotes respect and is free of violence and all forms of harassment and discrimination.

#spiritday-imageWe also encourage our employees to give back in various charitable events such as Movember, WWF’s CN Tower Climb and The Boys and Girls Clubs of Toronto Race for Kids and raising funds for causes such as Epilepsy Toronto and Autism Speaks Canada. Companies that participate in events which encourage employees to give back to the community or that promote well-being, is proven to increase overall morale and productivity. Another initiative that Miratel will actively support again is #spiritday.

Now in its 4th year, #spiritday is an event that was launched by GLAAD (formerly known as Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) an organization that amplifies the voice of the LGBT community by empowering real people to share their stories, holding the media accountable for the words and images they present, and helping grassroots organizations communicate effectively. By ensuring that the stories of LGBT people are heard through the media, GLAAD promotes understanding, increases acceptance, and advances equality.

Now supported by millions, the one day event observed on Thursday October 17th this year gives participants the opportunity to take a stand against bullying and show their support for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) youth and accept them for who they are, an issue which in recent years has been at the forefront because of the raised awareness of bullying related suicides.

Ways to participate and show your support includes:

  • Wear Purple – Symbolizing spirit on the rainbow pride flag, wearing purple is the easiest and simplest way to show your support to your family, friends, colleagues and peers.
  • Turn Your Profiles Purple – Go purple online by turning your profile pictures purple or by posting the “I am Against Bullying #spiritday 10.17.2013” logo as your profile picture.
  • Engage Your Work Place/School – Promote #spiritday at your place of work or at school and ensure you spread the word engaging your peers and colleagues to participate.
  • Donate – Make a donation to the Spirit Day Fund, which helps the GLAAD organization’s year-round efforts to combat bullying and support LGBT youth and garner support for and participation in the annual Spirit Day

For more information on this event and resources visit the #spiritday website and wear purple with pride. Happy #spiritday!
