CSR business values are at the core of our business and even though we try our best at every turn, we’re always identifying ways we can do things better. Whether it’s the smallest effort like finding and choosing a product that is made from more recycled material than our previous purchase or a grander gesture (for us) like partnering with Bullfrog Power to become 100% green powered or completing our AODA certification. Even though we don’t have the resources or reach of some larger companies we like to stay on top of their CSR business efforts for inspiration and ideas.
We have previously written about the 50 Best Corporate Citizens in Canada 2011 released by Corporate Knights that measured the companies results from criteria in 4 categories: environmental, social, governance and transparency. We recently came across another Top 50 Socially Responsible Corporations in Canada list on Macleans.ca which selected companies based on their performance across a variety of environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators. The indicators were tracked by Jantzi-Sustainalytics and were selected from their rank amongst their respective peer groups in Jantzi-Sustainalytics’ Global Platform.
All companies included on the list are either “Canadian-listed or a wholly owned subsidiary of a foreign-listed company with significant operations or brand presence in Canada. Each of the companies has a significant market capitalization or brand presence in Canada and is featured on at least one of the following lists: the ROB Top 1000, the ROB Top 350, or Interbrand’s Best Canadian or Best Global Brands lists. Given that Canadian subsidiaries of foreign companies are inextricably linked to their parent companies, the evaluation is based on the performance of the foreign corporate entities.”
The research methods used include a thorough examination of:
- company documents;
- media sources;
- online databases;
- government sources;
- NGO research; and
- direct communication with key stakeholders.
Some of the companies that made the list are 3M, Adidas, Bank of Montreal, Royal Bank of Canada, Starbuck’s, Campbell Soup, Cascades Paper, Canadian National Railway, Loblaw Companies Limited, Nike, Nokia, Scotia Bank, TD Bank Group, Telus Corp, and Gildan Activewear.
I was surprised by some of the entries on the list because I don’t necessarily associate the brand with CSR business values but it was interesting to read how each business is making strides in improving their social and environmental impact. It’s progress not perfection afterall.
