10 Most Reputable Cities in the World

I am often write about lists and reports that I come across that rank Canada on the world’s stage. In the past some of these posts have featured the true north on lists such as the smartest countries, the happiest countries, the best countries for entrepreneurs, the best countries to livethe most competitive countries to do business in the world, the most peaceful countries in the world and even the most reputable countries. Today I am going to continue exploring the reputation study with a look at the cities with the best reputations.

The list of the most reputable cities in the world is based on the 2012 City RepTrak™ Topline Report, which was published by the Reputation Institute. The Reputation Institute is the world’s leading reputation management consultant and has been measuring a cross-section of reputations since 1999.

The Reputation Institute calculated the “Pulse score [by using] three dimensions that influence perceptions of a country and its reputation, or the rational bond between stakeholder and country. It is the importance of these 3 dimensions, which drive country reputation and stakeholder support include: Advanced Economy, Appealing Environment and Effective Administration.” Those three dimensions were further broken down into thirteen categories, which were: products & services, location of leading companies, technology, financial stability, business environment, safe environment, political/ legal institutions, policies, infrastructure, leaders, culture, enjoyable, and physical beauty.

The evaluation were conducted by “the general public within the G8 [who] were surveyed based upon their perception of which cities are the most attractive to Visit, Invest, Live, Work and Buy From.

The 2012 most reputable cities in the world according to the Reputation Institute are:

Canada-Coal-Harbour-Vancouver-BC

Canada Coal Harbour Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia

  1. Vancouver, score: 74.22
  2. Vienna, score: 74.03
  3. Sydney, score: 73.01
  4. Copenhagen, score: 72.96
  5. Oslo, score: 72.14
  6. Barcelona, score: 71.84
  7. Florence, score: 71.66
  8. Venice, score: 71.04
  9. Stockholm, score: 71.03
  10. Melbourne, score: 70.68

Being a Toronto native, I wondered where my great city was and I found it at #22 with a score of 68.10. It was the only other Canadian city in the top 25. The third and final Canadian city on the list was Montreal, which just missed a top 25 spot coming in 26th with a score of 67.62. San Francisco was the only American city in the top 25 coming in 15th with a score of 68.95.

Overall the results of this ranking, according to the general public, shows that a city’s general appeal holds more weight when it comes to their reputation than their economic advantages. This is something that will have a strong impact on tourism, as travelers want to go to safe and clean cities when they vacation.

Additionally, this can have an impact on a country’s economy and more than just about tourism dollars. That is because businesses and investors will look at this type of survey when they are making decisions about where to invest or expand a business location/production. We congratulate Vancouver for coming in first and representing Canadian values and our great city for coming in 22nd. We think it will do even better next year.
