U of T Launches Largest University Fundraising Program in Canadian History

Canada’s premier university sets $2 billion dollar goal in Boundless fundraising program

The University of Toronto is known as being a leading Canadian educational institution and they recently launched their latest fundraising campaign titled Boundless with a goal to raise $2 billion dollars for the university. At a time when a “what’s the point” attitude may prevent some people from pursuing educational goals, the university’s latest fundraising program serves as a reminder and aims to help make it happen.

The Campaign for the University of Toronto has a vision for U of T’s future, built on two central pillars: Meeting Global Challenges and Preparing Global Citizens.

In late September, The University of British Columbia announced a $1.5-billion campaign that set a new record for Canadian universities having secured $760-million in advance. The University of Toronto’s $2 billion dollar goal announced Sunday is now the largest ever set for university fundraising in Canadian history and it comes at a time when educational donations have been lagging in Canada and recovery is falling short of US giving trends. The US saw a decline of 12% in fundraising support in 2009 and that remained in 2010, according to studies by the Council for Aid to Education. However, support appears to be rebounding lately at major American universities as the University of Southern California announced the launch of a record-breaking fundraising campaign in August with a $6-billion fundraising goal.

U of T strives to become a global leader in key areas that are pivotal to the future well-being of our planet and with donor support, faculty and students can find solutions to these pressing global challenges. U of T’s Boundless campaign priorities include:

  • Successful Societies
  • Energy, Sustainability and Environment
  • Human Development and Health
  • Invention and Innovation
  • Knowledge and Meaning
  • Student Life and Learning
  • Access and Opportunity
  • Global Fluency and Leadership

“This is an extraordinary milestone for the University,” said the Hon. David R. Peterson, Chancellor of U of T. “With input from across our community, we have developed an eloquent, bold vision for a world-leading university in the 21st century. We will look to our global network of friends and alumni – who now number more than 500,000 across 174 countries – to join us in this exciting campaign. With their generosity and involvement, we will work together on fundamental questions that will shape the course of human knowledge and experience and prepare our students for leadership in an increasingly borderless world.”

The university has already secured $966 million in fundraising so they are nearly half way there. It appears the university is going to utilize traditional means such as telephone fundraising, online giving and mail outreach programs and they are confident their Boundless campaign message will inspire greater donor support. The university’s last major fundraising program was in 2003 which raised $1 billion.
