10-safest-countries-canadaThe publisher of this list, Factofun, is a website which explores “fascinating, funny, bizarre, interesting and amazing facts about several fields of science and technology, geography, entertainment, movies, music, arts, literature and history.” They used each country’s mortality rate, as the basis for this listing and based on this information, the safest countries to live in the world 2014 are:

  1. Denmark: At one point both crime and terrorism were serious issues, but they faced and resolved them to become the safest country.
  2. Iceland: They have a very low crime rate and no standing army.
  3. New Zealand: They have a very strict justice system, which results in a safer environment.
  4. Norway: Norway is so safe that, in general, their police officers do not carry guns.
  5. Austria: Their most common criminals are petty thieves and pickpockets making it (in general) a safer place to live.
  6. Finland: Their foreign policy has largely been to remain neutral and their justice system uses mostly “punishments [like] fines, probation and community service.”
  7. Sweden: The homicide rate in Sweden is amongst the lowest in the world.
  8. Canada: “Narrower class differences, leading to reduced economic tensions among different earning groups” helped make Canada a safe place to live.
  9. Singapore: Singapore is known for being clean and safe, mainly due to their strict public policies.
  10. Tuvalu: Is a small island state in the Pacific Ocean known for being peaceful. Even though they are the third-least populous countries in the world, they are often thought of as one of the safest.

Most of these countries have a smaller population or low population density, which is interesting, as it seems to correlate to safety. In the end, a good quality of living, clean environment and low crime rates all contribute to how “safe” a country is for its citizens.
