Today I’ll be looking at the top ten from the 2013 Best Corporate Citizens in Canada released by Corporate Knights (CK).

10-Best-csr-business-Corporate-Citizens-Canada-2013CK “is a media, research and financial products company focused on quantifying and animating clean capitalism drivers for decision makers.” CK defines clean capitalism as “an economic system in which prices incorporate social, economic and ecological benefits and costs, and actors know the full impacts of their actions.” CK is proud to be the first print business magazine and research firm in the world to be a Certified B Corp.

The methodology CK used to establish the short list for the top 50 companies was to look at “all Canadian companies with revenues of at least $2 billion and 2,000 employees in 2011.” Once the field was whittled down the remaining companies were judged based on 12 key performance indicators: energy productivity, carbon productivity, water productivity, waste productivity, percentage tax paid, leadership diversity, clean capitalism pay link, CEO-to-average worker pay link, safety performance, innovation capacity, employee turnover and pension fund status. Based on this research, the top 10 from The 2013 Best Corporate Citizens in Canada are:

  1. Vancouver City Savings Credit Union – Industry group: Banks. Score: 62.42%
  2. Teck Resources – Industry group: Materials. Score: 58.22%
  3. Co-Operators Group – Industry group: Insurance. Score: 55.53%
  4. Barrick Gold – Industry group: Materials. Score: 53.91%
  5. Mountain Equipment Co-op – Industry group: Consumer Durables & Apparel. Score: 53.35%
  6. Suncor Energy – Industry group: Energy. Score: 53.00%
  7. Tim Hortons – Industry group: Consumer Services. Score: 52.89%
  8. Mouvement des Caisses Desjardins – Industry group: Diversified Financials. Score: 51.99%
  9. Agrium – Industry group: Materials. Score: 51.30%
  10. TELUS – Industry group: Telecommunications. Score: 51.2%

This list illustrates that “companies are raising the bar on sustainability, a recognition that being environmentally and socially responsible is more than just the right thing to do – it’s good for business are happening across all industries.” In fact, “57 per cent of TSX 60 companies now consider sustainability targets in their executive compensation plans, one of many changes to Canadian corporate culture that have emerged in the 12 years since Corporate Knights first began conducting the Best 50 ranking.” Congratulations to all the companies that made this top 50 list and for consistently raising the bar.
