10 Best Cities for Travel 2015

In order to compile this yearly guidebook, Lonely Planet takes into account recommendations from their “authors and editors [and even their] online family of bloggers and tweeters” and their top 10 lists are chosen for their “topicality, unique experiences and ‘wow’ factor.” According to Lonely Planet, the 10 best cities for travel in 2015 are:

  1. Washington, D.C., U.S.A., The US capital was chosen mainly because 2015 is 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and the Smithsonian museum will have many of the President’ artifacts on display.
  2. El Chaltén, Argentina: This location was chosen because of its amazing natural attractions like the “jagged 3405m Monte Fitz Roy and ice-rimmed Cerro Torre.
  3. Milan, Italy: Thought of as one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan made the list because of “Expo 2015 – the latest of the world fairs held since the mid 1800s – will take place between May and October with a focus on food.
  4. Zermatt, Switzerland: The Matterhorn mountain, which rises above the city, best known to hikers, and skiers will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first ascent by Edward Whymper.
  5. Valletta, Malta: Valletta’s main attraction this coming year is its architectural overhaul, which deftly mixes old and new design.
  6. Plovdiv, Bulgaria: Plovdiv made the list for its “Rhodope Mountains, historical treasures, and smouldering nightlife.”
  7. Salisbury, U.K.: Salisbury will be celebrating its greatest treasure as this coming year marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. Salisbury Cathedral is the center point of celebrations, as they have the best-preserved copy of the document.
  8. Vienna, Austria: Architectural marvel the Ringstrasse, 150 years after it’s inception, will be boasting “a line-up of special events and exhibitions [that] is cranking up the celebratory feel – not to mention this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.”
  9. Chennai, India: It’s the Chennai Metro Rail, which has raised Chennai’s profile in 2015.
  10. Toronto, Canada: Coming off of hosting last year’s first ever North American held World Pride Day, our city will be hosting the 2015 Pan American Games. The games are expected to bring in an estimated 250,000 visitors to the city.

It should be noted that in the same report, Canada did not earn a spot on the their top ten countries list. This best cities list highlights just some of the amazing places and reasons to travel in 2015 and we’re honoured and proud that Toronto was counted amongst them. The full comprehensive book can be purchased on the Lonely Planet website in paper and ebook form.
