Today I’ll be adding the 10 most sustainable Canadian companies from the 10th annual Global 100 clean capitalism report released by Corporate Knights (CK), a Toronto-based “media, research and financial products company focused on quantifying and animating clean capitalism drivers for decision makers.” I previously wrote about this report when I featured the 10 Most Sustainable Companies and the 10 Most Sustainable Countries from the Global 100.

CK released the 10th edition of this list to highlight companies that are making sustainable choices clear for their consumers. The Global 100 annual clean capitalism report uses 12 metrics to be able to rank companies and the information used is only what the company makes available to the public. This is because CK believes in transparency in both business and sustainability. Based on this methodology, the 10 Most Sustainable Canadian Companies from the Global 100 report are:

  1. 10-most-sustainable-canadian-companies-global-100-2014Tim Hortons Inc. Ranking on the list: 22 – Industry group: Consumer Services. Score: 63.6%
  2. Bombardier Inc. Ranking on the list: 24 – Industry group: Capital Goods. Score: 63%

  4. Bank of Montreal. Ranking on the list: 49 – Industry group: Banks. Score: 55.6%

  9. Enbridge Inc. Ranking on the list: 75 – Industry group: Energy. Score: 51.1%
  10. Encana Corp. Ranking on the list: 76 – Industry group: Energy. Score: 50.9%

There were a total of 13 Canadian companies that made the list in 2014 which was up from 10 in 2013. This illustrates that Canadian companies understand the growing importance of transparency and sustainability in a corporate setting. CK even points out in the report that Canadian businesses did this without any government incentives or intervention.

The 10th annual Global 100 clean capitalism report should serve to inspire businesses in Canada – and everywhere – to do their part and embrace corporate sustainability and transparency.
